<description>Excellent piece. A clear example of the public policy stupidity of government&#039;s priority on power export over community interest are the boil water advisories that will soon be facing many communities.

Vancouver is served by 3 watersheds - Coquitlam, Seymour and Capilano. Coquitlam was built to supply water to residents when the other two silt up - as they regularly do during heavy rainfall events. You just switch over. Then Coquitlam watershd was taken off line (from our water supply) to ensure penstock flow into Buntzen Lake for power generation, All of which I understand is committed for export. Others like Will Koop are the experts here. My understandings are based on conversations with municipal engineers who guided a series of three GREAT watershed tours perhaps 10 years back.

Our water is on the auction block. An many Vancouverites boil their water this fall and winter (silt acts like a pathogen bus) they must remember that this is only one of the results of decisions made by short sighted politicians to sell off one of this provinces greatest resources – our free flowing rivers.

The independent power projects the BC government is encouraging are a public policy nightmare. In addition to all the other good reasons to oppose them, they are NAFTA protected. To read why, go to http://www.saveourrivers.com and click on NAFTA RIGHTS)

How dumb is that?
